If you installed an extension that you didn’t get from Google’s Chrome Web Store, it’s getting turned off when Google releases Chrome 25. Unlike most software that prompts you for an update, Google updates silently – so one day your browser will stop working the way you expect it.
Here’s what you need to know to protect your browser experience and the extensions you’ve come to depend on – after the Chrome 25 install.
Caution Ahead!
The only warning you’ll get is this small window (shown in Image 1 below) popping up after Chrome updates itself.
Don’t miss this warning or you’ll miss the easiest chance to make your browser right.
When you the window appears, click the Extension Settings button to open a tab with all your extensions. If you miss this opportunity, we’ll give you a Plan B farther down in this post.

The Internet browser wars have been raging on for a while now, with Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft’s Internet Explorer and Google Chrome (though Safari is in the fold) essentially jockeying back and forth to become the most popular/safest/fastest etc. options out there.
As these browser giants compete, users win. Significant updates are rolled out on a regular basis as each one tries to separate itself from the competition.
But who is really winning? Which is truly the best internet browser? As we turn the page to 2013 and look back on a frenzied 2012, we have learned that the major browsers continue to fight for the top position, while a major focus has turned to the mobile world.
Here are a few of the browser war’s 2012 highlights:
Social media is an incredibly important aspect of our lives, as more and more of us continue to feel the need to be connected at all times. Whether it’s creating a status update that generates a discussion on Facebook, sharing your thoughts on a TV show on Twitter or posting your favorite furniture on Pinterest, it is true that social media has officially taken over our lives. So let’s embrace it! With these Chrome extensions, you can take your networking prowess to the next level.
Chrome social media is alive and well, and here are a few of our favorites:
The battle for Internet browser supremacy has been narrowed to three competitors: Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and the old mainstay, Internet Explorer. While Internet Explorer remains a key player – especially after its latest overhaul and marketing campaign – Chrome has captured the majority of online users.
The battle for mobile browser supremacy is another story, though. While Chrome, Firefox and Microsoft are all in the game, plenty of other players – such as Safari, Opera, RockMelt, Aurora and more – have an influence.
So who exactly is winning the mobile browser war?
It’s tough to say – the best mobile browser is going to load quickly and offer a streamlined version of its desktop version; it won’t just a scaled-down replica. It’ll make switching between tabs easier (often with the swipe of a finger) and won’t look cluttered.
The list of mobile browsers goes on and on, but here are a few that are trying to separate themselves from the competition:
When it comes to browsing the Internet, we all want efficiency. All of the major web browsers (ones like Firefox, Internet Explorer and Chrome) are designed to offer users just that – an efficient, fast experience.
That is why there are a vast number of web browser shortcuts available to help make you feel like an expert in Internet browsing. These browser shortcuts do everything from managing your bookmarks to saving you valuable seconds by quickly opening new tabs or switching between the ones you already have open.
We’ve put together a list of our favorite browser shortcut keys from Chrome that are sure to make your time on this tremendously popular browser even better.
Brand Thunder LLC (http://www.brandthunder.com), the browser theme specialists, in celebration of this summer’s major release with MLB.com, is launching the “Major League Giveaway.” The Major League Giveaway is a chance for a non-profit or charity to win a custom-built set of themes for Chrome, Firefox and Internet Explorer.
To enter, non-profits and charities simply email info(at)brandthunder(dot)com by Friday, August 31 with the name of the organization, contact name, email address (if different from sender) and a phone number. On Tuesay, September 4, voting will be open on Brand Thunder’s Facebook page. The organization with the most votes by Friday September 14, will win. It’s easy to win a browser theme, and easier to keep winning with fans through the browser theme.
Google Chrome 21 broke the installation process for developers like Brand Thunder who host their own downloads. While we were working toward a fix for their August 15 release date – they pushed early resulting in downloads not working as of now.
Update: Installer for Windows Available
If you’re on a Windows PC, you’ll download a .EXE file. Save that file to your computer and double click to start the installation of your theme.
Mac & Linux Users:
Providing an installer actually increases the amount of work you. Because of that, please follow the instructions we originally posted below:
The manual steps you need to take are the type of experience we strive to provide our users. Until Google allows for a different option, the video is a good summary but text instructions also follow. This 50 second video from the fine people at Blogsolute offers a nice visual of what will be described below.
You may have seen the frightening warnings that Google Chrome will pop when installing a theme. “WARNING! This extension will follow you home from work!” Eek!
OK, it’s not that bad, but it can feel like it. To be fair, Google is just trying to warn you of what could happen, not what will happen. It’s kind of like your mom following you around and telling you not to get run over every time you cross the street. I appreciate the consideration, but…
The world of Google Chrome extensions is vast, which is a great thing. That gives you, the user, plenty of options when choosing ways to improve the look and functions of your browser.
But there’s no denying that some extensions simply get lost in the fray. With thousands of them to choose from, there’s simply no time to find everything that the Chrome store has to offer. That’s why we at Brand Thunder wanted to find some of the best Chrome extensions that you may not know about.
These are the browser extensions that are chock full of great features, but don’t always get the same recognition as some of the bigger names out there.
