Jason Calacanis recently wrote an editorial called “The Age of Excellence” and he raises a lot of good points. His visual of a ratings gun and it’s effect on the future of business is compelling. Those of us who are fans also know Jason can be a little over the top, and he is with his passion for excellence. I don’t take issue with the goal of excellence. It’s important, however, to realize what excellent isn’t, and to know we can’t be great at everything.

Excellence is Not Perfection

The folly of perfection was planted as an idea in my first economics course. If 90% is an A, stop when you reach 90%. Shooting for 100% is wasted effort. It has taken me far too long to recognize the significance of this. I held the ideal of perfection for too long with too high a cost. This is a nuance that I think is lost in Jason’s appeal for excellence.

If you’re working toward perfection, you’re working too much on something that has exceeded its value. As Jason says, good will not cut it in today’s environment. But there’s a big gap between good and perfect and the sweet spot for business  – what Jason calls excellence – I suggest is in the realm of good enough.

Good Is Not Good Enough

Jason uses Steve Jobs and Apple as an example of achieving excellence with their products. But notice that Apple often does not deliver more than what those products need to be. Remember how lacking version one of the iPad was? Front and back facing camera? No. USB port? No. Printing options?!? NO! Printing is a given, right? Wrong.

We forget all that after the fact. At that moment in time, the iPad was good enough. It wasn’t perfect, yet, it changed the world.

Be Great Where You Can

We’re all in awe of Einstein’s brilliance, but he was a horrible father. LeBron James is letting his three-point game go so he can focus on his inside game. “Good at less, great at more.” Great is a very limited commodity and requires a lot of time and energy to get there. Find the thing(s) you can be great at and give it the necessary effort. There’s just not enough time for you to be all things.

Jason acknowledged that he’s letting some things go, but it was such a passing comment that it’s easy to miss. As the leader, he’s the champion of excellence. That doesn’t mean he is excellent at everything. And in this Age of Excellence, we can’t afford the misstep of focusing too much effort and energy where we shouldn’t.

That’s why startups and companies are teams. One person won’t be good at all things. You’ll see this message amplified in the blockbuster that opened today. “Avengers assemble!” shows that even superheroes have their limits and perform better as a team.

That’s what fan marketing is about. Connecting with a group of passionate users in a way that taps the affinity they have for that thing they love. So, what’s it take to connect with your fans in this way? It’s a three step plan. Let’s take a look.

When you think of over-the-top fans, it’s easy to think of sports. On any given day, turn on a game on your favorite sports channel and you’ll see your share rabid supporters. While not every fan wants to be “that guy,” every fan respects that guy (unless his hair is blocking your view of the game, but that’s a different point).

Show Your Colors

What the soccer fan clearly gets is that color is key and marketers had better get it right. If you’re a fan of the Atlanta Braves, you show your Navy and Scarlet colors. It’s not blue and red. Michigan fans don their Maize and Blue, while Ohio State fans show up in their Scarlet and Gray. Get it right to be one of the fans. If not, you’re just a poser.

When fans are involved, you don’t always have to tone it down. Sure, you’ll find logo wear on neutral colors, but you’ll also find most of it in the unapologetic original colors – loud and proud.

Show Some Class

Clean and elegant never go out of style. That’s why the Nike Swoosh is easily adorned to hats, shirts, shoes, even electronic gadgets and people flock to the brand. One simple swoosh captures product quality, a statement of lifestyle and communal pride. It’s clean lines have allowed it to persist, unadulterated for decades (though some less elegant designs can also make that same claim).

Coca-Cola is the most recognizable brand in the world. I credit a portion of that to purposeful and consistent fusion of the logo and product.  The Coke bottle was designed to contour the human hand, arguably a perfect design for the purpose it held. Then the bottle’s shape was evoked in the Coke wave to reflect the lines of the bottle. You have physical as well as visual cues that connect you with the brand. That’s a class by itself.

 Show the Brand

Brands help us associate positive values and experiences with the products they represent. This association can be so powerful, it can survive three horrible prequels and still be as powerful as ever. It’s also a powerful identifier for fans to identify with and gather around. So leverage that power by including it in the products being offered for your fans.

When you look at the brand/fan connection, it’s easy to see it’s a visual one. So, leverage it to the fullest. You don’t have to be timid, you can be bold. And elegance doesn’t necessarily mean understated. These are your fans. Give them what they want. Loud and proud.

While the music industry doesn’t look like it did in the Tower Records heyday, it’s alive and well in its current iteration of local nightclubs,  iTunes and Amazon music stores, Spotify and Pandora music streams. When Brand Thunder turned over the keys to browser theme builders with BT:Engage, we knew lots of different communities would be attracted to it. We recognize some of the best in our weekly browser theme of the week contest. Others seem to stand out when you look at the full collection of themes that are built and offered in Brand Thunder’s Theme Gallery. At the start of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, there were 34 teams with browser themes. Thirteen teams  that reached the Sweet 16 offer their alma mater browser themes. Mozilla is showing it has the naming skills of George Forman and using the same name for a second product. After years of Personas representing easy-to-use, lightweight themes that let you personalize the look of your Firefox, it’s now your name. Or, to be more accurate, your online identification. Mozilla is stepping away from how your browser represents you to you, and toward how your browser represents you to others. Confused? Exactly.

But that’s not the first time the browser industry has stumbled over its naming.

For years, the navigation area of your browser was known as the browser chrome. And then Google came along and made the Chrome browser, forever cursing us with the additional baggage of saying “by browser chrome, I don’t mean the Chrome browser.” It’s like when the artist Prince became “the artist formerly known as Prince” there’s just no easy way to say it.

You don’t become the leader in the market by underachieving, so Google took the extra non-essential step of naming its new operating system Chrome OS. If the Chrome OS ever takes off, we’ll enjoy a nice round of “Who’s on First” whenever the topic comes up.

With this setup, you won’t be surprised to learn that, last summer, when we launched our build your own browser theme wizard, BT:Engage, we weren’t the first BT Engage. British Telecom has its own Engage offering. You’ll be even less surprised to know that Google also has its Engage.

You may have read earlier in the week how Brand Thunder and BrowserNation were coming together to bring the full host of Chrome, Firefox and Internet Explorer browser themes to more professional teams, artists, entertainers and more.

We’re thrilled and can’t wait to get all the themes built and delivered to our new clients and their fans. The news of the event went out across the Twittersphere based on coverage from CNET and tech blogs, including:

BrowserNation has a beautiful product for the Firefox browser. The look and feel of these themes will change to fit Brand Thunder’s layout for Firefox.
